Since joining The Signal in 1989, Tim Whyte has developed a wide variety of skills as a writer, editor, designer and manager. A longtime Santa Clarita Valley resident (more than 30 years), he has also built a deep and broad knowledge of local people, businesses and issues.

Professional Background

The Signal, Santa Clarita, Calif.

Tim Whyte joined The Signal in 1989 as an entry-level news reporter. He covered a wide variety of news stories, ranging from local politics to crime to sports, and worked his way up through the ranks of the newspaper’s editorial department. He served as city editor briefly before being named the paper’s editor in 1994. He held that post for 10 years before being promoted to the position of general manager in 2004. As general manager, he was second in command of the paper’s staff of nearly 100, and had oversight of all aspects of the newspaper’s operations. He served in that role until departing the paper in February 2007 to form Whyte House Media. In Tim’s final year at The Signal, the paper was honored with the National Newspaper Association’s General Excellence award for community newspapers.

Tim has served as a part-time journalism instructor at CSUN since 1998. He teaches copy editing, headline writing, layout and current issues in editing as part of the curriculum for the Journalism Department’s upper-division editing class.


Education

California State University, Northridge

BA in political science and graduated cum laude in 1993. Courses included international relations, political theory, U.S. and local politics.


College of the Canyons, Valencia, CA

AA in journalism, graduated 1990. Served as editor of campus newspaper and was co-founding editor of magazine. In addition to journalism major, he completed all requirements for the business management major with emphasis in marketing.


Community Involvement

Santa Clarita Valley Press Club

Co-founder and president of non-profit organization created in 1997 to provide scholarships to local students who plan a course of college study related to the First Amendment. The club hosts an annual "SCV Newsmakers of the Year" fund-raising dinner/auction and awards approximately $40,000 in scholarships annually.

Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry

Serves as a member of the board of directors for the food pantry, whose mission statement is that no child in the Santa Clarita Valley should go to bed hungry.

Other Community Involvement: Editor, Los Angeles Jr. Kings Yearbook; Member, SCV Dodger Night Committee; Past Board Member, YMCA of the Santa Clarita Valley; Volunteer coaching experience includes youth flag football and Valencia Express youth hockey club.


Personal

Tim has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1975. He graduated from Saugus High School in 1984. Having grown up in the community, Tim and his wife, Erin (a Hart High grad), have chosen to raise their family here, too. Their son, Luc, is 13 and an avid ice hockey player. Their daughter, Brooke, is 7 and enjoys gymnastics.
